5 Warning Signs Your Home Needs Pipe Replacement
Most homeowners don't think about their pipes until something goes wrong. But your plumbing system is constantly working behind the scenes, and over time, it can deteriorate in ways that aren't immediately obvious.
The first and most telling sign is discoloured water. If your tap water runs brown, yellow, or rust-coloured — especially first thing in the morning — it's a strong indicator of corroding iron or steel pipes. While it may appear to clear after running for a while, the underlying problem doesn't go away.
Recurring leaks are another major red flag. A single leak can often be repaired in isolation, but if you're calling a plumber every few months for new leaks in different spots, your pipe network may have reached end of life.
Low water pressure throughout the entire house — not just one fixture — can indicate significant scale buildup, corrosion narrowing the pipe interior, or multiple small leaks reducing flow. This is particularly common in homes built before 1970 with original galvanized steel pipes.
Listen for unusual sounds: banging, clanking, or hissing from behind walls or under floors. These noises can indicate pipes that are loose, under pressure stress, or leaking into insulation.
Finally, look at your water bill. An unexplained spike in consumption — with no change in household habits — often points to a hidden leak. Some leaks lose hundreds of litres per day without ever surfacing visibly.
If you recognize two or more of these signs, contact a licensed plumber to assess your pipes before committing to any repair or replacement work.
